So…..about my last post 🙂
Remember how I said I love to do things I am afraid of?? Well………I’ll be travelling to South Korea in a few weeks!! Ok, truth be told, travelling there doesn’t actually make me afraid, it rather makes me nervous and a bit more aware of myself.
Both North and South Korea, as I am sure you know, are homogeneous countries and have been so for a while. Although North Korea continues to remain largely homogeneous click to read , South Korea, however is gradually becoming more diverse and accepting of foreigners.
That being said, foreigners are still a very small percentage of South Korea’s total population. This means that there are still some Koreans who may have never met a foreigner.
Now, as you all know, I am a black girl, but not just that, I am dark-skinned as well. What makes me nervous and a bit more aware of myself is that I know I will stand out like a sore thumb and will not be able to blend in wherever I go.
Granted, I have overcome the insecurities I had about my skin tone and absolutely ADORE and LUURRRVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEE (I think you get the point lol) my skin tone now, it still doesn’t take away the fact that having people stare and possibly make comments, is uncomfortable.
Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to assume that this will happen, but you know what we all tend to do before visiting a place? Yup, I did that. I google’d and youtube’d!! And there are loads of videos on ‘being black in Korea’, and everyone says the same statement ‘yup you will be stared at and will definitely not blend in’.
But you know what? It actually makes me look forward to the trip even more, because it will certainly be an experience and one I will not have gained, had I never decided to go because I held onto the fear of something different. I think it’s a great opportunity to be part of representing the black race to some whose first encounter with anyone black could possibly be myself.
I will be travelling with a friend and we will be vlogging our experience whilst we are there. I will be sharing everything with you! So watch out for both the videos on my YouTube Channel and blog posts…..OOooooo I can’t wait!!
There might be some bad experiences and definitely some great ones, but it will most definitely be a trip I am sure I will always treasure!
Speak soon. X
